A tale of not-so-noble media
2009 February 2
In academia, they tell you that the noble role of the media is to inform, to educate and to entertain – ‘media’ in this context refers to the press.
And then they go on to muddle things by talking about the co-dependence between editorial and advertising.
I think it’s fair to surmise then that:
- The role of editorial is to inform, educate and entertain in order to garner eyeballs; and
- The role of advertising is to persuade, sell and monetise these eyeballs in order to fund editorial
In the age of social media and user-generated content, there is no editorial to fund, is there?
The plot thickens.
